Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and OnlaysInlays and Onlays are a kind of partial crown prosthesis that are used to restore the loss of tooth matter resulting from root canal treatments, cavities and traumas by replacing only the areas of teeth where such loss has occurred or to put it simply, they are a kind of filling prepared in laboratories using various materials such as gold, various alloys, composite materials or porcelain.

The application of inlays and onlays result in the preservation of the natural state of the undamaged part of teeth on which they are applied, similar to the application of laminate veneers. They are usually preferred by patients that have high aesthetic and comfort related expectations for application in the rear areas of the oral cavity, instead of the metallic and dark colored amalgam restorations. Furthermore, when a large number of fillings are required for treatment; following the processes of measurement and preparation of the patients' teeth which is conducted in one session, the porcelain fillings that are prepared in dental laboratories can be installed in the second session, saving a considerable amount of time. Likewise, the preparation of the restorations in dental laboratories instead of their preparation directly in patients mouths provides perfect compatibility.

Unlike the contents of amalgam fillings such as mercury, porcelain is one of the most biologically compatible materials with the human body. Not to mention that the highly aesthetic qualities of porcelain also make it a preferred option. Due to the combination of all of the factors mentioned above, the use of metal alloys and composite materials have greatly decreased in recent years and have been substituted by porcelain inlays.

Inlay and onlay fillings that are applied through the implementation of indirect methods allow the creation of perfect surfaces in cavities occurring in between two teeth, preventing the build up of nutrients. Due to their outstanding polishing qualities, the occurrence of adhesion of bacteria on their surfaces is extremely low. A minimal amount of composite materials come into contact with the teeth due to the fact that they are only used for the process of adhesion. Therefore, the possibility of micro leakage occurring is very low.

Advantages of Porcelain Inlays and Onlays:
They are aesthetic.
They are long lasting.
They preserve the remaining tooth tissue.
They minimize the risk of leakages and formation of new cavities.
They possess high biological adaptation qualities.
They do not cause allergic reactions.
Bacteria plaque retention is minimal.
Their implementation is very time efficient.
They offer a very precise fit for dental restorations.
