Orthodontics for Children

Çocuk OrtodontisiThe first examination to determine if orthodontic treatments are necessary should be conducted about the ages of 7-8. Early examination and if necessary, treatment allows the healthy development of the children's jawbones, the orderly arrangement of their permanent teeth, proper formation of lip and tongue functionality and elimination of bad habits, if present. The main goal of orthodontics for children is the elimination of factors that may later cause orthodontic problems.

Sometimes, orthodontic problems can be prevented by taking easily implemented, simple precautions without having the need to wear braces or dental plates. If the necessary precautions are taken in childhood and the causes of orthodontic and orthopedic problems are eliminated, such problems can be overcome to a certain extent. As a result, the patients can experience a mentally and physically healthy development phase. However, early diagnosis and treatment is usually overlooked.

Thus, when patients reach adulthood, they usually encounter orthodontic problems. At this stage, the second purpose of orthodontics which is correcting existing irregularities comes into play.  Elaborate communication of information and the use of high-tech treatment methods also yields very successful results in the implementation of orthodontic procedures in the treatment of adults.

The ideal time for orthodontic treatment is determined by the orthodontist taking into consideration such factors as the type of problem being faced and the severity of the problem. The treatment of simple dental problems are usually postponed until the age of 12 when dentition is completed. However, especially the problems related to the first molar teeth, problems that occur due to the premature loss of primary teeth and skeletal problems that occur in the jawbones fall within the category of treatments that must be made at an earlier age. Due to the fact that the problems related to the positioning of the lower and upper jawbones are treated using the development potential of the children, treatment must begin around the ages of 7-8 and end around the ages of 11-12.

Early diagnosis of an existing problem provides the orthodontist the following advantages.
The orthodontist can guide the development of the jawbone.
The orthodontist can take the necessary precautions to prevent possible traumas that may be experienced by patients that have protruding front teeth in case for example they are struck by a ball or if they fall down. Breakage of the front teeth due to trauma is frequently encountered in patients with protruding teeth.
The orthodontist can prevent harmful habits that may adversely effect oral health.
The orthodontist can improve physical appearance and increase self-confidence.
The orthodontist can guide the better positioning of permanent teeth.
