What are the Factors that Need to be Considered After Treatment?

Patients who have had braces installed for the purpose of orthodontic treatment must pay particular attention to the following factors in order to achieve successful results from their treatment.
Never bite any soft or hard food items with your front teeth (sandwiches, hamburgers, toast, corn on cob, fruits, etc.). Consume your food in small bites after tearing or slicing them into little portions using a fork and knife.
Consume fruits in small bites after they have been peeled and sliced.
Do not consume food items like chips. If you insist on eating chips, you should first crumble the chips into powder form and consume using a spoon.
Do not consume dried shell nuts or other dried food items.
Stay away from hard food items (bread crust, toasted bread, popcorn, etc.).
Do not chew gum.
Do not consume sticky food items (caramel, sticky candy, etc.).
Consume foods like olives, cherries, plums, etc. after you have removed their seeds.
Do not consume carbonated and sweetened beverages (Coke, Fanta, Sprite, etc.). These beverages cause discoloration and cavities.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day; once in the morning and once at night, in the manner advised by your dentist. After brushing, check your braces to see if there are any scraps of food stuck on the surfaces of teeth or in between the braces. If these remains cannot be removed by brushing alone, use an interdental brush to remove them. If you cannot achieve sufficient oral hygiene, discolored areas and cavities may form.
If you notice protrusions or sharp edges on your braces that disturb you, place orthodontic wax over these areas.
In the event that your braces are damaged or are broken, please consult your orthodontist immediately, instead of waiting for your next appointment. Broken or damaged braces or wiring can have adverse effects on the outcome of your treatment.
Take care to attend routine examinations at the specified dates and times. If you will not be able to attend the examinations at the predetermined dates and times, please contact your dentist and reschedule an appointment at least 1 day prior to the appointment you will miss. Failing to attend examinations regularly can have adverse effects on the outcome of your treatment.
You may experience pain, sensitivity of the soft tissues and in some cases small wounds may form in the first week when orthodontic apparatus are installed and after your routine examinations. In this case, you may take your usual pain medication. (Children should take pain killers that have been advised by their pediatrist)
Bring your toothbrush, toothpaste and all orthodontic apparatus you use to all of your appointments and brush your teeth while you are waiting for your orthodontist to examine your teeth.
