Tooth BleachingDiscolorations of teeth have gained more attention as the importance placed on aesthetics has increased. Therefore, tooth bleaching has become one of the fastest developing areas of aesthetic dentistry in recent years.

The increase in aesthetic treatment options could create a rise in the demand for rectifying problems that adversely effect oral aesthetics such as tooth discoloration, flourosis and tetracycline coloration. Tooth bleaching can be conducted both at home and in clinics using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

Tooth bleaching is offered to patients as a means of correcting the appearance of dentition as a relatively more conservative and cost effective method than porcelain laminate veneers and aesthetic crowns.

Tooth color is a combination of the optical characteristics of teeth. As a result of the interaction between the teeth and light four different phenomena are observed; namely, permeation of light through the teeth, its reflection on the surface of teeth, its absorbance in tissues and scattering of light. Tooth color is determined using the volume of scattering light. It is a known fact that tooth color is defined by the color of the internal layer of the teeth called dentine and that the external layer or enamel plays a very small role in the determination of the color of teeth.

The application of chemical agents to discolored teeth in order to oxidize the organic pigments embedded deep in the dentine and enamel tissue is referred to as "bleaching".

The use of fast and dependable light sources has modernized tooth bleaching treatments in clinics. Nowadays, peroxides used for tooth bleaching treatments in clinics are being activated with an energy source. Argon, carbon dioxide and diode lasers, plasma arc lamps, quartz halogen lamps and infrared lamps are used in clinics for the activation of peroxides.

In our clinic, we conduct tooth bleaching treatments using a diode laser and achieve striking results in just a single session. If required, the bleaching effect is maintained for longer periods of time through the help of household type bleaching plates.

Sensitivity of teeth which occurs as a result of tooth bleaching treatments can be treated both actively and passively.

In some cases, pausing treatment for a few days can be effective in preventing sensitivity. Actively treating sensitivity entails fluorides and specialized tooth pastes that prevent sensitivity. Fluoride basically clogs dentine canals and slows down the flow of liquids that cause sensitivity.

This causes a reduction in perceived sensitivity. At our clinic, we perform laser aided fluoride application in the last session of the tooth bleaching treatment if deemed necessary.
